Car Care...Should You Buy A New Car?

$$$$$ CAR PURCHASE - TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY? $$$$$

The August edition of "Consumer Reports" magazine details whether you should go ahead and repair your older vehicle (8 years) of the mid-price range, or get a new set of wheels. An extensive study showed that in most cases it is better to keep and care for your car. For instance, expenses including maintenance, insurance and other fees over a three-year period on a used ehicle is about $4,000 (study based on an 8-year old, midrange priced vehicle.) Compare this amount to the fees and costs of a new car of about $15,000 and $19,000 for leased vehicles over a three-year period. It just may turn out that keeping the older car and maintaining a regular car care schedule will be the wisest decision! If you do decide to buy, no matter what model or year car you have selected, be sure to have an independent diagnostic mechanic check over the vehicle. (Pep Boys now offers a 200 point diagnostic check on used cars that is guaranteed for 90 days. This offer is available in most states.) This is a good step to take to give you some piece of mind. Never purchase a used car offered "as is" unless you have it thoroughly checked out from stem to stern. No sense in car care for an auto that is just about junk.

$$$$$ TURN THAT OLD CAR INTO A TAX DEDUCTION! $$$$$

Get rid of that old or unwanted car by giving it to charity. No use caring for a care that you don't want anymore. But don't give it to just any organization. The three top organizations for auto donations are: 1. The Salvation Army 2. Goodwill Industries 3. The National Kidney Foundation You can find information on these organizations and locate additional ones by visiting the website for the National Charities Information Bureau . Here you'll find precise tips on how to donate safely and wisely. Before you make your donation, do a bit of research on the value of your car (you might decide you care about your car) by checking with Kelly Blue Book or with at Edmunds. Enter all the information accurately about your auto, such as the condition, year, mileage, etc. They will process the info and return to you a fair market value. Be sure to print a copy and keep it with your tax return as proof to the IRS of your donation.

$$$$$ A FEW "CAR CARE SMARTS" TIPS $$$$$

Don't change that flat in the rain on the way to your holiday party and ruin your tux, sir or your sequin and beaded dress, ma'am! Take a moment beforehand to store some sweats, socks, and pair of sneakers in the trunk of the car next to the spare tire. If you get a flat, you can throw on the sweats over your good clothes, kick off your shoes, and change into the sneakers. Then you can change the tire without having to worry about messing up your pretty party clothes. While you're putting your "breakdown" clothes in the trunk, go ahead and put in an "accident kit," too, consisting of, at least, a disposable camera, pad of paper, pen, and flashlight. In case of an accident you'll have what you need to collect information and take on-the-spot photos. You can draw a map and record details while it is still all fresh in you mind. (Don't forget to carry your insurance card, and a cell phone, too, if you've got one.) It never hurts to be prepared!
