Don't Throw Away That CD! Be your own cd repair service.

So you got a scratch on your CD you are tired of listening to your favorite song skip or play the same note over and over again. You can repair scratched cd at home.

1)Wipe the CD with a clean, fine cloth form the center of the disc to the outside of the disc in a straight, linear motion. Do NOT, repeat, NOT wipe the CD in circles, this will cause more scratches. I learned this the hard way. Imagine cleaning your almost brand new cd so you can trade it in at your local cd trade shop and the shopkeepers frown at you because they think you have abused your cd. You are thinking, what?! I just bought it! Now you know why it has those scratches.

2)Once you've got the surface clean, place a very small amount of toothpaste on the scratch. That's right, I said toothpaste! You can use whatever brand you like.

Then, with another soft, clean cloth, rub the toothpaste into the scratch until it's gone. This is best done on a flat surface such as a desk or tabletop. Not on your carpet.

3) When the larger scratches are filled, polish the CD with a chamois cloth and any petroleum based polishing solution. And just what, you ask, is a petroleum-based polishing solution? Well, Armor-all is one. Clear shoe polish is another. And then there's the granddaddy of all petroleum based polishing solutions - Vaseline. Whatever solution you use, just remember to wipe in straight lines from the inside out to prevent further scratching.

4)To finish, wipe the CD off with a clean cloth (I sincerely hope you have enough soft clean cloths in your house for all of this) and a small squirt of Windex or other water-based window cleaner.

Now you have a scratch free CD which you can play many more times. This also works with CD- ROM's in most cases, although I wouldn't recommend it for CD-RW discs. And keep in mind that it probably won't work if the scratch is really, really deep.
