Easy Domain Name Parking Strategies

by Gary C. Bucher

There are several excellent reasons for "domain name parking," but just in case the practice of domain parking is new to you, let's review.

Domain name parking, in its most basic form, is the practice of buying a domain name for your own future use or to prevent a competitor from using it. The purchased name is then "parked" on a web host's domain name servers where it awaits your use.

Although you may be buying that domain name for a specific project, domains are cheap enough these days that you could buy one every time you get the slightest inkling that there's a related project you might want to undertake somewhere down the road. Even if you eventually decide against it, by parking that domain, you've protected your option to use it.

Another reason to park a domain name is to protect your brand. Suppose your web site, www.my-great-product.com, is doing a landsdslide business. You wouldn't want someone to capitalize on your success by registering mygreatproduct.com or my-great-product.net, would you? Of course you wouldn't.

Some web hosts will allow you to "point" or forward your parked domain to another URL. Let's say you still own my-great-product.com. During a phone call with a prospective customer, you want to give s/he your web address. Rather than spell out the whole thing, including the hyphens, you provide your parked domain name, mygreatproduct.com. A lot easier, isn't it?

Let's take this a huge step further. Some domain name parking hosts allow you to specify sub-domains for your parked domain. Your sub-domains for mygreatproduct.com might be named specials.mygreatproduct.com and catalog.mygreatproduct.com. Each sub-domain can point to a different URL, so specials.mygreatproduct.com would forward visitors to the page at my-great-product.com where you list your specials, and catalog.mygreatproduct.com could forward your visitors to the catalog at your main site.

Cool, huh?

Yet one more reason to use domain name parking is that rather than display those hideously long affiliate merchant URLs, you can set up a sub-domain for each one.

I've used a number of domain name parking hosts over the past several years, but I have never seen anything like Name Park It! For just $9.95 per year, you get your choice of parked domain name with UNLIMITED sub-domains. However, since nobody makes any money on this (not me, not the company), there is a small catch.

Name Park It! is not available to the general public. Only those who purchase a Site Build It! web site, or those who are members of SiteSell's 5 Pillar Affiliate Program are allowed to purchase Name Park It! domains. As I said, it's a small catch. Site Build It! is the best web site building/marketing system available. No other system offers as many features or guarantees your success. Naturally, although Site Build It! is affordable, it's not free.

Becoming a 5 Pillar Affiliate, on the other hand, is free. When you join the 5 Pillar Program, you're joining the best affiliate marketing program on the web, so if you're looking for a great program fine. If not, that's fine, too. As a member, you're under no obligation to buy or sell anything. But you do get to take advantage of Name Park It!
