Have you seen the TV infomercials for Internet Treasure Chest and SMC?  I was convinced that I could succeed using a turn-key, merchandise site on the web.  They sold me a package, complete with membership fee and a web hosting capability that allowed me to draw upon their databases to determine whether an item was in stock or not.  What they did not have was any sort of online promotion functionality.  Without going into the gory details, after sinking over $4500 into the venture, I closed down after a years effort with $75 in sales.

Failure #2 was tough. Forty-five hundred bucks is a hefty chunk of change to just drop and leave for dead.  In fact, I didn't drop it that easily.  In my quest to make that site more profitable, I ran across the Make Your Site Sell product on the Internet.  You can check out a sample of it here.

It was then that I discovered that my effort hocking wares was doomed for failure. Here's why:

• I didn't believe in my product.
  To be frank, I was a bit embarrassed with the fact that I was associated with such cheap chachkee garbage.  If you want to be successful in anything, Make Your Site Sell teaches you that you need do something that you can talk about, something that you’re willing to teach to others and something that you’re willing to learn more about. • I was out to make a quick buck. 
  While that was not my intent upon upstart, it became apparent in the end, that was what I was doing.  Make Your Site Sell taught me that without the respect of a potential customer, you will have very few of them.  I'm sure I knew that before, I just never admitted to myself that I would the unwitting culprit. You need to give your audience something of value.  You need to provide your audience with the appropriate CONTENT.  The stuff they're searching you out for in the first place.  If they like what you are saying, they are more apt to become your customer. 
   
• My promotion plan was simply not going to work.
  Promotion plan? What was a promotion plan?  I thought you just build it and they will come.  Make Your Site Sell shows you how to leverage a multitude of online marketing channels and how to tailor your message to each one. 
   
• I went into the job without knowing about all the tools I would need.
  The more I read, and reread the Make your Site Sell materials, the more I was able to understand that success was not going to happen to me by chance.  There were a lot more steps and a lot more tools out there that I had expected.
