Getting started with keyword optimizationWhen you are brainstorming keywords for your website there are several websites and tools that can help you with keyword suggestions.
GoTo.com's Keyword Suggestion ToolThe ‘original’ keyword suggestion website. Enter a keyword, and GoTo will return a table with search terms that includes the keyword. GoTo will also report how popular each of the keywords are. By itself, this tool is only suitable for basic brainstorming because it doesn’t perform any lateral searches. It also only lists demand, but has no supply figures. This tool is free.
JimTools Keyword Research
Enter a keyword and this tool will return a table of related keywords. It doesn’t return any demand or supply figures, but it will return a far more versatile list of keywords than GoTo. This tool is free.
WordTracker
Enter a keyword and WordTracker will return a list of related keywords complete with both demand and supply figures. The keywords returned will be of the same ‘quality’ as those returned by the JimTools Keyword Research tools, but unlike JimTools, WordTracker will also provide you with figures on how popular the keyword is and how many competing pages exists. It’s not a free tool, but if you need to do a lot of keyword research, it’s an obvious choice.
Site Build It Manager
The Site Build It! Manager which is a part of the SBI! Ensemble will provide you with the same type of keyword suggestions as WordTracker, but will include information about the competing pages as well. The biggest benefit of the SBI! Manager compared to WordTracker is that is has a built-in pay-per-click search engine bid optimizer. Once you have brainstormed your keywords it’s a snap to submit bids to the major pay-per-click search engines. Of course you only have to take demand figures into account as well as how much you are willing to bid for each keyword as the number of competing pages has no relevance in a pay-per-click search engine.
